We all know how happy and comfortable our family pets are when they are in their familiar surroundings and in their comfort zone. Pets, very much like people, are happiest when they are at home and typically possess an instinctive fear of new surroundings and environments. Though this fear is present, the good thing is that pets can adjust quickly and nearly 100% of the time do just that. The team here at The Green Truck Moving & Storage Company understand full well how difficult it can be moving with pets, which is why we thought these important tips would be useful to our valued clients.
Careful pre-planning is an important first step when you are making a move with pets and will help to minimize or avoid altogether relocation problems. Pre-planning, whether for your household goods, belongings, valuables or your pets is something you should engage in as soon as you have decided to make your move.
Applicable State Laws
If you are planning on moving out of state, it is important to research the laws of the appropriate state with regard to bringing pets into the state. Nearly every state has applicable laws so make it a point, early on, to contact a state veterinarian in your new state to learn about and understand their laws. Further, you need to contact the city clerk where you are moving to and find out what the license fees and regulations are for your pet.
Health Requirements
You may not be aware that many states also require you to provide a certificate that lists all inoculations your pet has had to verify that he or she has no infectious diseases. You should reach out to your current vet and ask that they provide you with the necessary documentation and make certain to tuck it away in a safe place when traveling.
Proper Pet Identification
In your new state you will need to provide proper pet identification. You should already have a permanent identification tag as well as rabies tag for your pet, but we suggest you make an additional ID tag that includes your pet’s name, your name, the address of your new destination, and emergency contact info.
Traveling with Your Pet
Be sure to purchase in advance any supplies and carriers that you will need to travel with your pets. Put together a pet travel kit that includes toys, feeding and drinking dishes, food and treats. If you have never travelled with your pet before, it makes good sense to start taking little drives with your pet in advance of the big move to get him/her acquainted with travel.
Your New Home
Once you have moved into your new home be sure you use your pet’s regular water and food dishes, bed, toys, blankets or any other items that have always been a routine part of their lives in your previous home. Try locating all these items in places that are similar to the locations in your previous home. This will help them to get comfortable quickly.
Once in your new home, you should take your dog for a walk around the new neighborhood to allow them to become familiar with their new surroundings and if you have a cat, wean him or her into their new surroundings and allow for slow exploration of the rooms in your new house. Try to adhere to the same feeding, playtime and walking schedules that you had at your previous residence and be sure to immediately establish boundaries in your new neighborhood and yard for the dog and in the house for your cat.
We hope you find these tips on moving with pets useful when it’s time to make that all important move to your new home.
